Self-Defense Option (Pepper Spray Gel)

As much as I would prefer it, my wife has no interest in carrying a firearm. Sadly, there just isn’t anything else that compares to a firearm during a life-threatening, self-defense situation. So, the best I can do is to offer her a less-lethal option, such as pepper spray, stun gun, or taser. Each of these items are compact and, with appropriate use, should temporarily incapacitate an aggressor.

Of course, each option also has its drawbacks. For instance, a stun gun requires you to be within arm’s reach and a taser may not penetrate some clothing. Even pepper spray isn’t effective against everyone; a quick YouTube search will offer plenty of examples of people being sprayed with little to no effect.

Granted, effectiveness largely depends on (1) what they’re being sprayed with and (2) the assailants mental state and tolerance for pain. This video, for starters, states that pepper spray is more effective than Mace because of a person’s ability to build up a tolerance to 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (or CS), the active ingredient in Mace, as compared to the direct effects of Oleoresin Capsicum (or OC), the active ingredient in pepper spray, on the body. In addition, a person who is on drugs or intoxicated may be far more likely to withstand the pain associated with being sprayed, regardless of what they’re sprayed with. Typically, pepper spray appears to be more effective than Mace, gels are more reliable than aerosols, and larger cannisters offer more chances to hit the target than smaller ones.
